2014 - Discovering The Cardinal Trail

CARDINAL TRAIL

1978 Columbus Outdoor Pursuits (AYH Council) established a signed bike route on paved roads across Ohio from near Richmond Indiana to Youngstown Ohio. This undertaking was conceived and accomplished in less than a year with the help of many people. Over 430 signs where placed so that the route could be traveled in either direction. The route had a trip-tik type map. By 1990 over 2500 maps had been sold.

1978  The Cardinal Trail was created by Ed Honton & Team in conjunction with Columbus Outdoor Pursuits. This is one of the first bike routes across the State of Ohio and first used by AOBT, Across Ohio Bike Tour.
(AOBT the original XOBA)

In 1979, Columbus Outdoor Pursuits (AYH Council) decided the Across State Bicycle Route, The Cardinal Trail, would be a good place to have an extended bicycle trip. Starting in Richmond, Indiana, and staying overnight in Piqua, Byhalia, Fredericktown, Canal Fulton and New Middletown. Eighty-Eight people attended the first AOBT.

2014 we are revisiting and updating the Route that started it all. The overnights are different, the Routes has had very few updates.
The Current Cardinal Trail runs across the middle-upper half of the state; From New Paris, Ohio to Petersburg, Ohio (Richmond, Indiana to New Castle, Pennsylvania)
We will be Parking near Petersburg, Ohio. Our first overnight will be near Muncie Indiana.
Before the planning for the 2014 XOBA we did not know there was another Cardinal Trail. Indiana has a nice system of reclaimed Rail-Trail, one of those is called the Cardinal Trail. We thought it would be really cool to take part of the Indiana Cardinal Trail to hook up with the Ohio Cardinal Trail. In 2013 some of the XOBA Team visited the current and original Ohio Cardinal trails to determine both where to go and how to update the current map.

Once all of the overnights have signed contracts we will announce them to everyone.
As always, the overnights we have been to in the past can not wait for us to come back. We really do have some of the best riders out there. The overnights we have never been to, want to know who we are, why we are doing this and occasionally we hear "Are you all Nuts??"

Every year we put together a list of near by hotels/motels. Please keep in mind if plan to stay in a hotel/motel each night, you are responsible to get to and from. They are not always near by and we do not know their quality. Our hotel/motel listing will be available in the spring.

Camp stoves, ETC!!! are not permitted
Our contracts with schools, YMCAs, etc strictly prohibit the use of
Camp Fires, Camp Stoves and other such devices.
